Mini Chainsaw. Tips From Professionals

Mini chainsaws can be a great alternative to full-sized chainsaws because they are lightweight and can be used to get into tight spaces. It can be much easier to transport a mini chainsaw to different jobs, and many professionals use them regularly and keep them a part of their toolbox.

Mini Chainsaw:

A mini chainsaw is a smaller version of a traditional chainsaw. It is designed for lighter and more precise cutting tasks and is often used for pruning branches, cutting firewood, and carving wood. Mini chainsaws are typically powered by electricity or battery and use a small guide bar.

If you choose a mini chainsaw, you want to make sure you consider the different types and choose the one that best meets your needs. There are many different mini chainsaws on the market. I will also answer several questions on choosing the right one for you and give some maintenance tips.

Are Mini Chainsaws Any Good?

Personal preference is all that matters. It is possible to buy a chainsaw explicitly designed for doing small jobs where a full-sized chainsaw would be too large. These machines have a portable, compact design that makes them more convenient than their larger counterparts. Since the mini chainsaw is much smaller than an average chainsaw, you can easily take it anywhere.

Some small chainsaws are amazing, but what makes them so special? To begin with, they combine a small size with a powerful engine. This makes them lightweight, but they can still cut through various types of wood and branches. Of course, they are less potent than their bigger brothers and have less cutting depth. But aside from that, they feature easy-to-use features that make using them highly convenient.

The smaller size makes them a perfect choice for a compact garden or on a balcony, as it takes up less room to maneuver. The chainsaw still delivers most of the advantages of a larger chainsaw: it’s powerful, fast, and accurate, and it won’t quickly overheat or get stuck.

What Are The Pros And Cons Of Mini Chainsaws?

Despite their greatness, they aren’t perfect. Even though they aren’t as good as their bigger counterparts, they can be expensive.

A mini chainsaw is most commonly used for recreational purposes because of its low power. Many people do not realize the potential of mini chainsaws because they do not know much about them. The limitations of the mini chainsaw are important for anyone reading this article.

● Not as strong as a full-sized chainsaw

The most important con is that the motor power rating on mini chainsaws is generally meager. Because of this, it cannot be used to cut down larger trees or other large jobs. However, this will be helpful for pruning or trimming your patio or lawn.

● Lower Size and weight

A mini chainsaw’s size and weight are two of its most noticeable characteristics. People can reach small areas and difficult places otherwise inaccessible by ladders using a mini chainsaw, and due to the lower weight, it is less fatiguing.

In my experience, there is nothing easier to use or more portable than a mini chainsaw. Mini chainsaws are primarily advantageous because they save time and money compared to traditional chainsaws.

● Affordability of a mini chainsaw

Many homeowners choose a mini chainsaw over conventional types since they are more affordable, easier to use, and require no assistance cutting timber in their backyards.

A mini chainsaw’s size and weight are two of its most noticeable characteristics. It allows individuals to reach difficult areas and small areas otherwise inaccessible by ladders when they use the mini chainsaw.

In addition to considering whether to hire a traditional contractor or purchase a mini chainsaw and handle the job yourself, you should also consider the type of service you might choose.

● Mini chainsaw limitations: branches up to 2 inches

Branches less than two inches in diameter are ideal for mini chainsaws, which provide crisp, clean cuts. Cutting a thicker branch or tree with a mini may not be easy, depending on your model.

A full-size chainsaw can cut through much thicker branches or trees, but the mini chainsaw is generally cheaper, much easier to handle, and safer. Women and men of all ages can use mini chainsaws because they are lighter and shorter than conventional ones.

What Is The Smallest Chainsaw?

The 4-inch bar chainsaw is certainly the smallest usable chainsaw available. There is no doubt they are chainsaws, even though they are usually called mini chainsaws! A mini chainsaw is designed to be operated with one hand and is generally powered by batteries.

Of course, even these small chainsaws vary in size and weight. Despite their small size, these differences still exist!

Is There A Small Battery-Operated Chainsaw?

Generally, mini chainsaws are battery-powered. An electric motor is small and powerful, and lithium-Ion batteries can deliver strong, consistent power. Furthermore, an electric chainsaw will start instantly with a trigger squeeze and are noticeably quieter than gasoline-powered chainsaws.

Another significant benefit of an electric power mini chainsaw is the much lower maintenance compared with gas chainsaws. There are no spark plugs and a lot fewer moving parts.

Despite its small size, it can still deliver a big performance. Additionally, there are many options to choose from

How Do You Put A Chain On A Mini Chainsaw?

Chains for mini chainsaws can be attached similarly to chains for large chainsaws. To keep your chainsaw running smoothly and safely, it’s important to do it properly.

● Step 1: Preparation

A large enough working area would be best before you start putting back a chainsaw chain. I also recommend wearing gloves to protect your hands. Additionally, ensure you have the right tools, such as a wrench or screwdriver.

● Step 2: Remove And Clean The Chain And Bar

Use a socket wrench to remove the bolts and nuts from the chainsaw’s bar and chain. After you have done that, the chain and bar can then be separated from the chainsaw and its housing.

If wood debris is present, chains and bars should be cleaned before reinstalling. Brushing the surface with a brush and wiping it with a cloth will remove debris and dust.

● Step 3: Putting The Chain On The Chainsaw

It is essential that you put the chain on the bar in the right direction. Place the chain with its teeth facing away from you to do this. The bar and chain can be loosely placed on the chainsaw, so you can check if the chain can be moved clockwise freely.

Next, align the grooves along the bar by setting the chain on the sprocket. In addition, ensure the tension stud and guide hole line up.

● Step 4: Reassemble The chainsaw

Having mounted the chainsaw’s chain and bar and positioned them correctly, it’s time to reassemble it. Using the tension screw, adjust the tension level while tightening the chain and pulling the guide bar. Place the nuts and screws in the right holes and add the saw’s housing.

The nuts and screws should only be tightened a little, and the tension on the chain should be set correctly before fully tightening them. Readjust the tension screw if necessary if the tension is incorrect.

● Step 5: Tensioning The Chain Correctly

If the chains are properly tensioned, you can lift them away from the bar slightly. But it should not be possible to pull the drive links out of the bar completely. The best location to check this is in the middle of the bar.

After installing the housing plate in the correct location, tighten the nuts and screws appropriately.

How Do You Oil A Mini Chainsaw?

You may wonder whether a mini chainsaw needs oil if you’re shopping for a new one. Oil is necessary to lubricate the chain and bar on all chainsaws, including mini chainsaws. Depending on the size of the saw, the amount of oil required will vary.

Mini chainsaws usually require less oil than full-sized models, but they generally have a smaller oil tank. So most mini chainsaws must be refilled as often as a full-size chainsaw. Check your owner’s manual for specific instructions for oiling your mini chainsaw. I recommend always checking and refilling the bar and chain oil before using it.

Checking the oil reservoir more often may also be necessary if you use your saw frequently or in dusty or dirty conditions. You can depend on your mini chainsaw for years with proper care and maintenance.

● Mini chainsaw with an automatic oiler

Some mini chainsaws have an automatic oiler. This means that when you use the chainsaw, the oil is automatically added to the chain. You only need to ensure that the oil reservoir contains enough oil for these models.

● Mini chainsaw without an automatic oiler

If the model does not have an automatic oiler system, manually add the oil to the chain before each cut. For most models, you must press the oil bulb one or two times and keep it pressed a few seconds before each cut. Check your user manual for the exact method.

● Mini chainsaw without an oil reservoir

You must manually lubricate the chain if your mini chainsaw does not have an oil reservoir. In that case, I recommend dripping oil onto the chain’s links before each cut while holding it up with one link facing up. Chains run smoothly when adequately lubricated.

● What type of oil do I need for my mini chainsaw

For your mini chainsaw, you can use regular chainsaw chain oil. Even a mini chainsaw has a smaller bar and chain but can use the same oil.

It is essential never to run a chainsaw without oil.

Good chainsaw oil keeps the chain running smoothly and prevents rust and corrosion. If you do not have chainsaw oil and you do need to use your saw, you can use one of the following alternatives:

  • Motor Oil
  • Vegetable Oil
  • Canola Oil
  • Hydraulic Fluid
  • Power Steering and Gear Fluid
  • Transmission Fluid

But I recommend changing to regular chainsaw chains oil as soon as possible.

What Is The Lightest Most Powerful Chainsaw?

Answering what the lightest and most powerful chainsaw is, means finding the right balance for your situation. On Amazon and other retailers, you can find 4-inch mini cordless chainsaws that weigh only 3 pounds. But those are not extremely powerful and can only be used for smaller jobs.

On the other end of the spectrum, you have gas chainsaws like the Echo X series gas chainsaws. At the time of writing, the Echo CS-2511T weighs just above 5 pounds. This full-sized chainsaw is considerably bigger than a mini chainsaw but is much more powerful. Gas chainsaw generally still outperforms battery-powered models, particularly mini chainsaws.

An alternative could be an electric-powered chainsaw. For example, the WORX WG305 weighs 6.6 lbs, slightly heavier than the Echo. It is powerful and much more budget-friendly, but it needs a mains connection, so it can only be used close to the house.

So there is no one size fits. I have used many lightweight chainsaws, and I think the Echo X series gas chainsaw is, at the time of writing, the best option if you are looking for a light power full chainsaw.
